Unique Nirvana Signed Album Sells At Auction

Check out this very unique, and quite rare, Nirvana signed album that just sold at auction for $3514.

The ‘Nevermind’ record requires no new words of wisdom from me. You know it changed the musical landscape; I know it changed the musical landscape; we all know it changed the musical landscape... But with Kurt gone, there’s a finite number of pieces available to collectors that adequately commemorate their historic footprint on America’s soul. THIS PIECE, irreverently marking up their own art, is fascinating in its playfulness and colorfulness. A fantastic addition to someone’s collection.

Guitar From Final Elvis Performance In Vegas Fetches $106,200

Just when you think the economy has stifled the market… some cool stuff comes roaring back. This past weekend, a bidder at the Profiles in History auction paid $106,200 for a Martin D-28 guitar played by Elvis Presley during his last Las Vegas performance. The expected range was $60-80,000.

The guitar (serial number 361827) was used by Elvis at the Las Vegas Hilton from December 2-12, 1976. In January, 1977 Elvis presented it to his bodyguard, Sam Thompson. Following Elvis’ death, Thompson sold the guitar in 1978 to The National Enquirer to fund his college education. The National Enquirer presented “The Elvis Guitar” to Cheryl Schmerr who won a national contest of over 60,000 entries in a well-publicized event hosted by the tabloid.

Other Hollywood and the music memorabilia sold included a bullwhip used by Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" for $56,050 and a full-scale Velociraptor model from "Jurassic Park" which sold for $76,700.

Michael Jackson's Original Glove To Be Auctioned For Charity

The glove.

No, not one of the estimated 100 that existed over the years for different events and tours…

…the ORIGINAL one Michael Jackson wore on the night of the "Motown 25" special in 1983 where he performed his soon-to-be-famous Moonwalk for the very first time.

THIS glove is white leather with rhinestones; vastly different from the ones he characteristically wore during the period which were right-handed and featured hand sewn crystals. It’s been reported that the glove was put together quite quickly as Jackson had only decided to use one for the show at the last minute.

It’s going to go under the hammer in a Music Icons auction event at the Hard Rock CafĂ© in New York's Times Square, on November 21.

The glove was given to The Commodores member Walter "Clyde" Orange by Michael himself back on the night of "Motown 25". Orange felt that it was too valuable to be kept in hiding and should be shared with the world.

The glove which may be considered the 'Holy Grail' of Michael Jackson memorabilia, is expected to fetch around $60,000.

Proceeds from the sale will go towards MusiCares, an organization that helps musicians struggling with substance abuse.

When the Beatles went to Paris in January, 1964, they did a photo shoot for the cover of the 1964 French EP "Les Beatles," an extremely rare record which has become to be known as "The Sandwich Cover." They’re eating sandwiches – get it?

The three-quarter length, "John Michael Bond Street" black leather coat worn by John Lennon on the cover just sold for $60,000 at the Gotta Have It “Rock & Roll Pop Art Auction.”

John gave the coat to his cousin David Birch in the 1960's and a letter from Birch was included in the lot.

Music Memorabilia: "Takin’ Care of Business" Elvis Style

TCB.

Elvis’ obsession with “Takin’ Care of Business” was never more apparent than in the necklace he wore and presented to those who became part of his very exclusive inner circle. Few were awarded – fewer have made it to the collector market. Of those that have made it out, most are simply made of gold. A diamond encrusted version was sold last week for $117,000. And not just any one – this one was owned by “Dr. Nick.”

Google Elvis’ personal physician “Dr. Nick” if you’re not familiar…

Michael Jackson Memorabilia (be careful)

If you want a piece of Michael Jackson memorabilia – I beg of you to stay away from eBay. The sharks are out… and without any authenticity oversight, there’s just no guarantee you’re getting what you think you’re getting. In fact, odds are great that you won’t.

On the flip side, the reputable memorabilia players have had nice items of late obtained directly from the source to ensure authenticity. Julien’s did very well last week moving 21 Jackson items for a total of $230K. A couple of notable pieces:

A copy of the Motown Records LP produced to coincide with the Jackson 5's hour-long 'Goin' Back to Indiana' prime time ABC-TV special in September of 1971. The album is signed in black permanent pen by Tito, Marlon, Jackie, Michael, and Jermaine, who are all featured on the cover of the album. The album is additionally signed by Randy Jackson who officially joined the band when he replaced Jermaine in the late 1970s. ($34K)

A Michael Jackson Victory Tour costume shirt. A custom sheer long-sleeve shirt with white spandex lining and covered in small pearls on one side and a combination of pearls and Swarovski crystal loch rosen on the other. ($52K)

Both items came from the personal collection of David Gest (producer and one-time Liza Minnelli husband).

Rare Spinal Tap Jacket Up For Bid

You know the scene.

You’ve seen it a hundred times. Maybe more.

During the Spinal Tap pre-tour party, Polymer Records head Sir Denis Eton-Hogg wishes the band "great success" with a rousing toast that ends with "And so say all of us... Tap into America!"

The party is a defining moment in the mockumentary as perky, chain-smoking, "hostess with the mostess” label rep Bobbi Flekman explains that the “Smell The Glove” album cover is so offensive Sears and K Mart refused to carry it (wow – remember when SEARS AND KMART sold records???)

Well, the rhinestone-encrusted leather motorcycle jacket bassist Derek Smalls wore in that scene can be yours. Julien’s has it up for auction.

You know you want it.

Music Memorabilia Recession Proof?

Neil Roberts, head of Popular Culture for Christie's says music memorabilia hasn't felt the effects of the recession. He expects as many bidders as ever at their Rock and Pop auction on July 1.

While the art world has suffered losses, with reserve prices not being met and dwindling sales, music memorabilia as an alternative investment continues to grow. According to Roberts, this is because though pop culture collectables may offer a healthy return on investment, profit is not the driving force behind the purchase.

Music Memorabilia Giant Passes Away

Don Bernstine, longtime music industry veteran with the self professed “coolest job in the world” passed away April 19 at the age of 53.

You may not know the name – but you know his work. He was the head of Memorabilia Acquisitions for Hard Rock International.

Don began his career as Director of Marketing and Promotion for Deep Purple where he worked closely with the band and oversaw several world tours and record launches, resulting in their platinum and gold status.

But he was best known for wheeling and dealing with artists to add to the vault of the world’s biggest music memorabilia collector.

Hard Rock will create a limited-edition pin in memory of Don, which will be available on http://www.hardrock.com/, with proceeds benefitting the Best Friends Animal Society, a nonprofit, membership organization building no-kill programs and partnerships that will bring about a day when there are no more homeless pets.

Donations may also be sent to the Donald K. Bernstine Memorial Fund https://www.bestfriends.org/donate/give.cfm to support the mission of Best Friends Animal Society. (Please indicate that the gift is in memory of Don Bernstine.)

Farrah Fawcett: The Poster That Made Her An Icon

If you posses both a Y and X chromosome, and you were breathing in the 70’s, you’ve seen it.

And if you were single at the time – you probably had one on your wall.

In all it sold 12 million copies.

Yeah, 12 freakin’ million.

As the world prepares to say goodbye to one of the most famous faces of a generation (and the woman who made the one piece red swimsuit legendary long before Pamela Anderson ever wore one), THE POSTER is back in vogue. eBay is flooded with at the moment – so finding one to replace your long lost original shouldn’t be too difficult.

And how it all came to be is pretty interesting.

Mike and Ted Trikilis, the college drop-outs turned 1970’s poster titans, got a tip from a buddy: all his male friends were buying women's magazines to get pictures of Farrah’s Wella Balsam shampoo ads. If I were you, the buddy said, I'd make a poster of her.

The brothers didn't know who Farrah was – this was before "Charlie's Angels" – but they figured if guys were buying women’s magazines just to get her picture, they'd surely buy her poster.

They contacted Farrah’s agent Rick Hersh, who didn't seem to grasp the concept.

"What type of product is Farrah to be selling on the poster?" he asked.

"We want to sell Farrah on the Farrah poster," they explained.

It was an odd request, but Hersh pitched it to her, who found the idea “cute” and agreed to the deal.

They shot the now iconic photo by the pool at the Bel Air home she shared with actor Lee Majors, TV's "The Six Million Dollar Man."

She did her own hair.

And that strange background? It’s an old Indian blanket the photographer was using to cover the seat of his beat-up Chevy.

In the end, she chose which pose was to be used.

And history was made.

Rock Stars' Cars & Guitars at the Henry Ford Museum

It’s been said “If the hot rod is the electric guitar of cars, then the electric guitar must be the hot rod of musical instruments” – and nowhere is that truth more evident than at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Once both derided as juvenile delinquent fads, hot rods and rock 'n' roll are being celebrated together in a unique exhibit on display May 16 to September 7, 2009.

The exhibit features more than 20 cars, more than 50 guitars, and a wide array of rock memorabilia from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the Experience Music Project, and the stars' personal collections.

Remember the “Eliminator” from the ZZ Top videos in the 80’s? That thing single handedly pushed Hot Rodding into the mainstream. It’s there. And so is the '36 Ford custom owned by Metallica’s Kirk Hammett; a '56 Lincoln Continental owned by The Who’s Pete Townshend; the '32 roadster driven by Ricky Nelson on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet; Jimmie Vaughan's '63 Buick Riv custom; and a whole lot more.

The Peace Song Challenge

If there’s a song burning somewhere in your soul about some much needed peace, love, and understanding, the good people at “Bring Peace Not Pain” want to hear it.

John Lennon Exhibit Opens At The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC is set to open an exhibition based on John Lennon's years in New York City that celebrates his passion for music, art, politics, and film.

Entitled "John Lennon: The New York City Years", the exhibit will open May 11 and include many artifacts from his life in New York, from photographs to musical instruments, handwritten lyrics, and artwork.

Favorites are Lennon's actual "New York City" t-shirt from Bob Gruen’s iconic photo, as well as the Tele he used during his last public performance at Madison Square Garden in 1974 when he performed with Elton John.

(If you’ve never heard THAT story… Elton made a bet with Lennon that their duet "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" would make it to #1. Lennon wasn’t convinced. If it did, Lennon agreed to emerge from his self-imposed retirement and play it live with his piano playing co-writer. After the song indeed reached the top of the Billboard chart’s, Lennon made a surprise guest appearance at Elton’s Thanksgiving concert at Madison Square Garden and performed "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" and "I Saw Her Standing There".)

Les Paul's House of Sound Exhibit at Discovery World in Milwaukee

The idea for the solid body electric guitar AND multi-track recording came from one man’s brain (and garage) – and his name is on the headstock of the most iconic guitar ever made: the Gibson Les Paul.

Now through December 31, 2009, music fans of all stripes have a rare opportunity to see the beginnings of both innovations in an exhibit designed around the creative spirit of the 93 year old inventor.

There you’ll find the famous section of railroad tie with a string attached (which constituted his earliest experiment at creating a solid-body guitar), the cobbled together telephone, speaker, and broomstick that made up one of his earliest attempts at amplification, and the workshop with his now antique lathes that were used to make history.

Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen was just there – along with his favorite 12 vintage Les Paul’s – for a fantastic guitar show.

If you go, be sure to take advantage of the studio portion where guests can jam virtually with the master.

CBGB’s reincarnated - sort of.

Just as Manny’s Music fades into the sunset, another New York icon has been reincarnated. The famed underground music club CBGB (launching pad for artists like The Ramones, Blondie, Television, and Patti Smith) has reopened its doors in the form of John Varvatos’ latest boutique. The menswear fashion designer has preserved much of CBGB's posters and graffiti-covered walls and recreated some of its gritty mood with dark wood, Victorian-style crystal chandeliers, velvet curtains, and a black ceiling.

The stage is long gone, as is its distinctive original door, but the space still has the same "feel", and the decor of guitars, drums, vintage hi-fi equipment, classic album covers, (and the same 70's pinball I have in my collection) help evoke its history. There’s talk of an in-house DJ and live performances – including a private album release party for famed glitter band New York Dolls.

"We're not trying to reinvent CBGB's," said Varvatos in a recent interview. "We're just trying to respect the past and let people have an opportunity to enjoy what was there.”

"The walls kind of talk in that place," he added.

Or maybe scream – huh?

***
And there is indeed a fair bit of controversy about the demise of the club, how and why that went down, and the new occupant – but lamenting the loss of another cool live venue was a battle fought some time ago when things got so effed up with the landlord. What we have now, instead of another God-forsaken Starbucks, is a guy who understands, appreciates, and wants to preserve the storied past. I, too, wish to God it was still a club – but given where we’re at, I couldn’t be happier the new tenant ‘gets it’…

“Big Bad John” Grammy and Original Muppet Survive Blaze

Jimmy Dean, known for some big time country songs and yes, sausage, is a memorabilia collector as well and last week his house went up in flames. But a quick thinking caretaker snagged the grammy, as well as pictures autographed by Elvis Presley and several presidents, gold records, and even Jim Henson's Muppet Rowlf (created for Dean's '60s-era show).

Rowlf wasn't just ANY Muppet -- he was THE FIRST Muppet. Built in 1962 for Purina Dog Chow (A Dean sponsor), Rowlf became one of the most popular cast members on the show from '64 - '66.

It wasn't until 1968 that he appeared with Kermit the Frog on the pitch reel for Sesame Street.
And the rest, as they say, is history.

The Beatles Rock Band Revealed (a little anyway…)

The musical interwebs are rightfully buzzing with news that Sir Paul, in what has to be the most clever and unusually staged debut of video game footage ever, gave us all a glimpse of what the Beatles Rock Band game will look like come this September.

The completely unexpected and purposely unannounced world premiere of the images from the much anticipated game was played on vast screens throughout McCartney’s performance of “Got To Get You Into My Life” at Coachella.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant.

Aerosmith: Get Schooled By Steven Tyler at Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp

The next incarnation of the now legendary Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp is about to get underway on the Sunset Strip – and the line-up has shaped up to be an eclectically diverse rock & roll stew. Headlining the 5-day out-of-body experience is master class lead man extraordinaire Steven Tyler.

Didn’t see THAT one coming – did ya?

Really – the king of double entendre, in-your-face, blues-based rock & roll will show you what time it is AND perform with you at the Whisky. (Go ahead, thank your higher being that Mark Hudson worked his magic on your behalf. It’s ok – I’ll wait.)

In addition to Steven and my friend, the aforementioned Markey Hudson (who wrote “Living on the Edge” with Mr. Tyler), other camp counselors include Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver), Todd Rundgren, Alan White (Yes), Kip Winger, Steve Lukather (Toto), Bruce Kulick (KISS), Elliot Easton (The Cars), Danny Seraphine (Chicago), and Share Ross (Vixen).

As always, there will be a charity auction of exclusive autographed memorabilia from Tyler and the other participating rock stars to benefit The MusiCares Foundation, which provides assistance to music people in need.

The Doors: Jim Morrison’s Microphone On The Auction Block

Buried in Forrest Ackerman’s collection of iconic Hollywood film memorabilia going up for bid at Profiles In History on April 30 is a Doors delight: Jim Morrison’s original Electro-Voice 676 microphone, Shure Vocal Master amplifier, and road case marked “The Doors.” It comes to the market via Vince Treanor, the band’s road manager from 1968-71.

The case alone is a thing of beauty.

And if you’re not familiar with Mr. Ackerman, here’s everything you need to know about an incredibly colorful individual:

Michael Jackson Auction – Just Beat It (that means it’s cancelled…)

Why is it that nothing with Michael Jackson is ever as it seems? Was this ever real or just an elaborate publicity stunt for a financially strapped artist desperate for a comeback? You can never be too sure with him. It’s hard to get your head around how this went from a $30 million auction to a memorabilia exhibit open to the public for 20 bucks apiece.

Doesn’t pass the ‘smell the glove’ test – does it? (that’s a Spinal Tap reference; but you already knew that)

So ya know what? Move on from these shenanigans and help some kids build a playground by bidding on some very rare guitar picks directly from the Bun E. Carlos collection. Much better cause. Much better guy.

KISS: The Kings of Rock Collectibles Coming to Your Backyard?

The undisputed kings of Rock Collectibles are returning to the road this summer – with a twist. In what appears to be a first, the band has announced that the cities on their upcoming tour of North America will be determined by... their fans.

How cool is that?

The band says, “No matter where the fans say – from stadiums to cornfields – if there are enough votes, KISS will be there!”

In order to keep the voting fair, the band is vowing to weigh a city’s population size versus total votes so that every city has a chance to win. Voting will also take place on the band’s website, MySpace and Facebook pages, Ticketmaster, VH1Classic, and various other websites.

I’ve already been pinged by numerous “get out the vote” campaign groups, so this could get VERY interesting.

No artist has more rabid fans – and no artist is more willing to connect with their fans, making this a match made in KISS heaven.
COME ON, people... VOTE. When's the next time you'll get to tell your favorite band where to play??

Bon Jovi Latest To Offer Stage Used Memorabilia Directly To Fans

With the economics of the music industry changing daily, artists are looking for creative ways to monetize their assets. An emerging trend is offering meet & greets, merchandise packages, and signed memorabilia directly to fans. It’s a win for both sides. Not only does the fan get something really cool – they get guaranteed authenticity. If this helps put even ONE predatory soulless fraud on eBay out of business – the world of collecting will be a better place.

Beatles ‘Rock Band' & Original Albums to Be Reissued Sept. 9

Those tinny 1987 versions of the 12 albums the Beatles released in Britain between 1963 and 1970 are FINALLY being reissued in a remastered form. Collectors around the world rejoice.

Each will be issued on individual stereo CDs and in two boxed sets — one stereo, the other mono.

If you’ve heard the beautifully restored recordings used for the LOVE production, one can only imagine what life with be breathed into these classic tracks.

And ‘Beatles Rock Band’ the same day???? Holy Rita The Meter-Maid, batman.

Glittery Glove Garage Sale: Auction of Michael Jackson's Stuff to Proceed

A Los Angeles judge has ruled that Julien’s can proceed with its auction of very personal memorabilia from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. Good news for Julien’s – who has spent $2M preparing for the April 22 event that is estimated to produce $12M worth of bids.

So what’s buried in there that the Jackson legal team is trying to protect? What is Jackson’s version of Charles Foster Kane’s Rosebud Sled? Having sent the catalog – other than the more-than-slightly creepy life-sized statues of butlers and "friends" – I’m not sure I can spot it.

Though I guess that’s the point. One man’s glittery glove may be another man’s childhood (or lack thereof).

The Hard Rock Gives Away Guitars

Anybody see the grand opening ceremony at the new Hard Rock in the just unveiled Yankee Stadium? Of course you did…

Smashing guitars instead of cutting a ribbon? Nice touch.

Even better was the donation to a local music charity that matched the number of guitars that were destroyed.

BTW – the smashed ones are rejected by the factory from Fender that wouldn’t have been sold anyway – so save your letters to the editor about wasting perfectly good instruments.
