Rare Hendrix Home Demo Hits The Market

A softer side of Jimi? A home recording by Jimi Hendrix, which its owners say shows the rock icon's softer side, will be auctioned next month and is expected to fetch somewhere in the neighborhood of $150K.

The story behind the story?

The demo was recorded by Hendrix in New York in 1968 and then taken to Britain. A guy named Carl Niekirk worked in a photography studio below Hendrix's central London residence where, because there was only one entrance to the building, he often doubled as the doorman for his famous neighbor where he let in guests like George Harrison.

In return for all the commotion, Jimi gave him two tapes. One was acquired in a pub several years ago. No one is sure where the second tape ended up.

Total of 37 personal reels are known to have survived after Jimi did not. This tape is said to be the only one available outside of the Hendrix estate. It features 14 tracks, including Jimi performing the Bob Dylan track "Tears of Rage." It also includes tracks from the 1968 album "Electric Ladyland" and features Hendrix singing and playing the guitar as well as an unidentified harmonica player.

Interest in Hendrix memorabilia has been high in recent years. Late last year the first guitar Jimi set on fire was sold at auction for $493,638.

Woodstock Museum Marks Festival's 40th Anniversary

Want to see the guitar played and smashed at Woodstock by Pete Townshend?

You can this summer at the Museum at Bethel Woods on the site of the actual event. To commemorate the anniversary of the festival, the fine folks at Hard Rock International have put together an exhibit of authentic artifacts from the original Woodstock.

There’s also talk of staging a concert this summer with some of the original artists. Let’s hope it goes better than the ill-fated 30th anniversary show in 1999 that ended in flames and all out debauchery. I left as the vibe turned dark and just before the mayhem ensued with my laminate all-access pass tucked safely away for my collection.

Orlando GuitarTown V.I.P. Reception and Live Auction

If you haven’t ever seen one of these – you should. Imagine ten-foot guitar sculptures painted by local visual artists and planted around towns like Nashville, Austin, London – and now Orlando. In addition to the big stuff, smaller versions are painted by rock stars and hung in other cool locations.

Once the run is complete, all the one-of-a-kind stuff is auctioned off for charity. More than a million dollars has been raised so far and the Orlando auction on May 9 will add to that total.

New York and Miami are coming soon – I’m going to start pushing for the home of Les Paul and the world’s largest music festival: Milwaukee.

Presley Jumpsuit sells for $212,588.40

Elvis Presley Blue Jumpsuit at auction

The iconic blue jumpsuit and cape The King wore during his Madison Square Garden performance on June 10, 1972 and later graced the cover of the live album “Elvis: An Afternoon in the Garden,” is currently up for auction at Gotta Have It Rock Roll. The opening bid was $100K and the current high bid is $161K.

It’s an amazing piece that epitomizes the look and feel of what Elvis felt was fashionable at the time.

So what’s the back story?

Turns out in February of 1973, Elvis gave this jumpsuit to Dottie Rambo as a birthday present. Who is Dottie Rambo? She was a member of the family group “The Rambos” who’s hit "If That Isn't Love" was covered by Elvis and released on his "Good Times" album. He was such a fan that just prior to his death, he had signed a contract to record a tribute of his 12 favorite Dottie Rambo songs.

We’ll see how close this one inches toward the $200K mark in the final hours of bidding.

Is it real?

I get asked that question more than any other. For legal reasons, I can’t make any guarantees, but if you have a question about whether an item is authentic or not, I’m happy to provide you with one of three answers: Real; Fake; or Inconclusive. Shoot me a link and I’ll take a look.

The Michael Jackson auction

If you haven’t followed the mess that’s surrounding the sale of very interesting (and in some cases, iconic) items from the career of the self-proclaimed ‘King of Pop’ – catch up here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29866189/

Darren Julien at Julien’s Auctions has a tremendous reputation and I can’t imagine he’d ever expend the energy and risk his stature if he didn’t feel the deal was done. Keep watching this one.
